Mexico, Mo. —
Erika Hebron danced to a song about being “Brave” and when she took the
stage Saturday night to hear the results of the Miss
Missouri 2010 competition, she wasn’t scared of being
defeated.
“I was actually so calm that it was kind of scary because I
didn’t even know what to think,” she said, moments after
being crowned. “I just had a great experience.”
Competing as Miss Gateway St. Louis, Hebron beat out 23
other contestants for the title and will now face winners
from 49 other states, the District of Columbia and the U.S.
Virgin Islands at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas in
late January 2011.
Between now and then, Hebron said she will be busy with many
tasks.
“I look forward to just getting out there and promoting my
platform, the Children’s Miracle Network and the Miss
Missouri organization,” she said.
Standing on a stage packed with family, fans, photographers
and pageant officials moments after the state pageant ended,
Hebron said the victory was an emotional one for her.
“I’m so overwhelmed right now,” she said. “I haven’t even
cried yet, I’m so happy.”
Hebron, who finished as a Top 10 finalist in the 2009
pageant and won the evening wear preliminary, had earlier in
the competition tied with with Miss Kansas City Kari Gai for
a victory in the talent preliminary. Hebron performed a
lyrical dance to the song “Brave,” during which she
impressed judges and the audience with her graceful
performance.
The top 10 finishers recognized Saturday were Miss Audrain Abby
Grimmett, Miss Lake of the Ozarks Sydney Friar, Miss Metro
St. Louis Claire Thorpe-Klinsky, Miss Northeast Counties
Mary Bauer, Miss Pulaski County Tippe Emmott, Miss River
City Erin Bagby, Miss Kansas City Kari Gai, Miss Gateway to
the West Katy Reed, Miss Springfield Jessica Sullivan and
Hebron.
In all pageant contestants were awarded a total of $35,750
over the four days of competition. The Miss America pageant
annually gives more than $45 million in scholarships.
Before the Miss Missouri winner was announced Saturday,
several other girls were awarded scholarships. Bagby and
Reed were each awarded $150 for their victories in evening
wear preliminaries conducted Wednesday night; Bagby, Gai and
Thorpe-Klinsky were each awarded $150 for their victories in
interview preliminaries. Miss Texas County Jennifer Terry
won the Show-Me Excellence Award, established in honor of
the pageant’s 40th anniversary in Mexico, and was awarded
$200; Miss Greater Kansas City Lauren Alumbaugh was awarded
$1,000 for academic achievement;
Miss Springfield Jessica Sullivan was awarded $1,000 for
community service and two other contestants were recognized
for their accomplishments in giving back. Miss Northeast
Counties Mary Bauer was awarded $500 by Commerce Bank for
outstanding community service and Miss Gateway to the West
Katy Reed was awarded a $250 scholarship in honor of
outgoing Miss Missouri 2009 Tara Osseck.
Gai and Hebron were awarded a $200 scholarship for finishing
with the most points in the talent competition; Miss Branson
Jeni Tixon and Miss Texas County Jennifer Terry won a $250
scholarship for the non-finalist talent award; Miss Jackson
Darbi Fuhrman won $500 for the non-finalist swimsuit award;
Miss Spirit of St. Louis Claire Thorpe-Klinsky won $500 for
the non-finalist interview award and Miss River City Erin
Bagby won $500 for the first-time contestant award.
Winning a $1,500 scholarship, Bauer was named fourth
runner-up; third runner-up Friar received a $2,000
scholarship, second runner-up Gai received a $3,000
scholarship and runner-up Bagby received a $4,000
scholarship.
In addition to the scholarship awards and the crowning of a new
Miss Missouri, Saturday’s pageant featured a slideshow
voiced by outgoing Miss Missouri 2009 Tara Osseck, who was
also recognized onstage and given flowers by family and
friends.
Nineteen former Miss Missouri winners, including Osseck,
participated in a production number in honor of the
pageant’s 40th anniversary in Mexico and Miss America 1990
Debbye Turner also spoke to the audience on large projected
screens from her home in New York, the last of several
former winners to reconnect with the pageant via the
Internet.

Miss Columbia 2010, Alexis Albright had the honor of being asked to
make an appearance at the Mizzou Alumni Ball. Greeting guests,
signing autographs and helping with the auction were a few of her
duties. All gifts from the auction were donated by Mizzou alumni and
the proceeds are solely for scholarships awarded to current MU
students. It was a great opportunity to meet many alumni as well as
a few known individuals: The University of Missouri-Columbia
chancellor, the director of the Miss Kansas City pageant, many of
her graduated sorority sisters who still showed greek spirit, two
professional football players, one of whom was Chase Coffman, the
owner of Tiffany and Co. on the Plaza in downtown Kansas City,
retired sports players, and her favorite, men who were on the
football team in 1967 still carrying around their old footballs.
Apart from meeting so many people, she was excited to be a part of
the largest and most popular alumni event in the country. Many
thousands of dollars were donated for scholarships at Mizzou, and it
was amazing to it see happen right in front of her eyes. |

Just an update of a few of my activities as Miss
Jackson. I sang at a royals game on August 2nd. It
was so much fun! I'm also posting some of my
pictures from the Jackson Veterans Home! After
singing for the veterans home, I have made two very
close friends. There names are Bud and Mike. You
will never believe it, the man standing up by me in
the picture is 94! That's Mike, he's so amazing!
When I went to sing at the Veterans home, I did a
"Dolly Parton Special" and even found some dance
partners to accompany me as I sang! I go visit Bud
and Mike every time I go home and I love playing
Bingo on Sundays with them or taking a trip to Bob
Evans for breakfast! I have learned so
much about their heroic and interesting lives! I
hope you enjoy my pictures!

were all allowed to make our own gravity-defying Blizzards. We also
met with CMN recipients and one particularly special boy, Bill, who,
after sharing his CMN story, couldn't wait to dig into his delicious
banana split. Bill received a liver transplant as a baby with
support from CMN. Watching his family beam with pride as he shared

biggest honors of my LIFE! This means more to me than winning Miss
Missouri, because I am giving back to the organizations that I love.
In February of 1992, I was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma. I was
just 5 years old, and faced 13 months of agony! I had 13 months of
chemotherapy and 4 surgeries. There were three types of chemotherapy
that I did receive because the first two were not working in the
ways that the doctors wanted. The third type was an experiment, and
it was a blessing because it worked! In March of 1993, I was
considered in "remission" which means that I was no longer in need
of treatment. This did not mean that I was cured. I had the
remission status for five years, and after that period I was
officially titled CURED! It was a BIG day, for the fact that I
didn't have to continue going to the doctor for check-ups. While I
was on treatment, the Children's Miracle Network was there by my
side. They were in the process of making the hospital less "Adult"
and making it more kid friendly. The once bland rooms were
transformed into dreamscapes to make the visits less dramatic. They
produced some of the most beautiful art, and it made the doctor
visits more "enjoyable" even when pokes and sticks were involved.
They had made the waiting rooms better by supplying games and
activities to do while we waited. They helped with the gas money to
get to the hospital, which was an hour and a half drive one way.
Without the Children's Miracle Network, my family would have had to
face much larger hardships than they had already been through. I
know that I have a lot of pleasant memories from being on treatment,
and that they out weigh the bad ones. I am forever going to support
the Children's Miracle Network, because I am a walking example of
the impact that they make! They put a smile on my face, and I hope
to share that smile with someone else. The smile of a child on
treatment is one true blessing, and it is because of partnerships
like the one with the Children's Miracle Network and the Miss
America Organization that those smiles are created! I know that I am
always going to keep the pennies rolling!
(The CMN Miracle Maker Award goes to the contestant in each state
who raised the most money for CMN/MAO.)

Mexico, Mo. -
"Three times is a charm," is the
adage that the new Miss Missouri titleholder Tara Osseck used to
describe her victorious win Saturday, after four days of
competition held at the Missouri Military Academy. Yet, the Lake
of Ozarks contestant admits, it was both mentally and physically
exhausting to get to the top, and subsequently capture the
crown.
"When I first started competing in this competition, someone once
told me that whoever can last the longest will walk away with
the crown, and they were right, because it's been physically
draining to get here," Osseck said moments after bring crowned.
The 22-year-old graduate of the University of Memphis was named
winner in an evening that showcased 28 participants from various
locations throughout the state, bringing an array of talents,
hopes and dreams.
" I don't think it's completely sunk in yet, because
I totally wasn't expecting this," Osseck said. However, as she
prepared for her sound bite, promoting the Miss Missouri pageant
and her win, she seemed to slide right into the limelight with
ease. Osseck's plans now are to begin preparations for the
national competition on the Miss America stage, and continue
working on her platform of teaching youth the importance of
education and goal setting, and the dangers of tobacco and
eating disorders.
"Being on the Miss America stage is something I've dreamed of doing
for so many years," Osseck said. And now, the chance of a
lifetime is hers. Her advice to others, "keep striving for your
goals."
Osseck said she also plans to continue to utilize every
opportunity to educate her audiences on the relevance of this
Miss America Organization, and the importance of supporting
local and state contestants. "Through personal appearances and
media outlets, I commit to utilizing every available resource to
help this organization thrive.
"Ultimately, I want to be known as the Miss Missouri who was most
publicly accessible and approachable, who most significantly
impacted the youth of our state, and who paved the way for
future Miss Missouri's by capturing the title of Miss America
2010."
In addition to Osseck, the initial top 10 candidates included
Miss Gateway to the West Lindsey Rich, Miss Kansas City Premier
Kara Adams, Miss Jackson Mary Bauer, Miss Mid-Missouri Erika
Hebron, Miss Springfield Sydney Friar, Miss Gateway St. Louis
Ashley Heath, Miss Metro St. Louis Kari Gai, Miss Audrain Amelia
Gandara, and Miss Maryville Katy Reed.
Those participants then competed in evening wear, talent and
swimwear competition, and from that group, Osseck, Rich, Gai,
Adams and Jackson were selected as the top five candidates. The
semifinalists — who each receive a $750 scholarship for
attaining top five status — then participated in a
question-answer session with television newscaster and emcee
John Brown before final announcement.
In addition to her title, Osseck — who performed a jazzy tap dance
to "A Worldwide Party" in the talent competition, and won the
$150 evening wear scholarship, with her selection of a white,
silver-sequined, scalloped evening gown, and two scholarships,
totaling $1,500, for community service — receives a $10,000
scholarship for capturing the crown. Jackson was named
fourth-runner up, receiving a $1,500 scholarship. Adams was
third runner-up, receiving a $2,000 scholarship. Rich was named
second runner-up, awarded a $3,000 scholarship, as first
runner-up, Gai walked away with a $4,000 scholarship — a win,
she also captured in the 2008 Miss Missouri competition.
Several other scholarship were awarded Saturday night, including:
$1,000 scholarship to Miss Western Missouri Lauren Alumbaugh for
Academic Achievement; $1,500 scholarship to Miss Springfield
Sydney Friar for the Talent Award, who also won the $150
scholarship for Miss Missouri Alumni Character Award; a $750
non-finalists scholarship was shared between Miss Columbia Paige
Sommerer, Miss River City Tippe Emmott, Miss West Central Janie
Gibson and Miss Christian County Trisha Deen; $500 scholarship
to Miss Mid-Missouri Erika Hebron for the Leadership Award; $500
scholarship each to Miss Midland Empire Danielle Dunn and Miss
Greater Kansas City Amanda Williams as non-finalists; $500
scholarship to Miss Northwest Danielle McKeirnan for the
non-finalist in the swimwear competition; $300 scholarship to
Miss Columbia Paige Sommerer for the Newcomer Award; $250
scholarship to Miss Moberly Stephanie Barnes for the Miss
Missouri Smile Award, established in honor of Miss Missouri 2006
Sarah French; $250 scholarship to Miss Metro St. Louis for most
points in dance; $150 scholarship to Miss Mid-Missouri Erika
Hebron for the evening gown competition. In addition, each
contestant not advancing to the top 10 round received a $200
scholarship.
Announcement of the winners and dispersal of the scholarships
capped an evening that featured numerous musical productions, a
parade of the 35 Little Sisters, who took part in the
competitions, and as part of their grand finale, wore
personalized sashes and tiny crowns - remembrances of the Miss
Missouri experience.
Also Saturday, recognition was given to outgoing Miss Missouri
2008 Lacey Fitzgerald, who followed with a slide show and speech
reflecting on her year-long reign, prior to handing the crown to
Osseck — who, in addition to numerous appearances as Miss
Missouri 2009, will compete in the Miss America pageant, slated
to be held in January 2010.

On Friday, May 15, Mr. Tom Adams
